6-1 Video

Template: Every one liner/sunglasses moment in CSI: Miami

I was inspired by the reading on digital literacy and remixing to create a supercut. I used this supercut of every time Horatio in CSI: Miami says a one liner while putting his sunglasses on.

My Video: All the creepy hands in The Bachelor

I decided to loosely use the supercut format from my template video. I cannot do homework without watching TV. If I am sitting in silence or listening to music my mind wanders...and wanders... and wanders... and it is impossible to focus. However, it has to be a very particular kind of show, one that I've seen once or twice before or that I won't get interested in. Buffy, Parks and Recreation, Battlestar Galactica, and Doctor Who are all favorites. One show that I like to watch while working is The Bachelor. It is incredibly fun to watch, probably because it is horrible in so many ways. While I watch The Bachelor I am always bemused at all of the creepy hands during makeout sessions. I decided to make a supercut of all the creepy hands in The Bachelor.

The music is meant to recreate the cheesy dramatic music that is used in the show.

I added the title to give the video a critical eye. I used IMovie to video the film, and used my phone to film everything to exaggerate my feeling of being a voyeur. I used scene cropping and the ken burns effect to zoom in on particularly uncomfortable moments.

  1. Your sense of humor is incredible. I loved the original video and your interpretation of it! I know you intended for it to be cheesy, but there's something beautiful about the combination of music and hands. This interpretation is probably different for people who experience or view intimacy in different ways. I love that it is so open for interpretation, whereas in the original video it is very clear that it is cheesy. SOME moments did make me cringe though. Reflecting back on the title and the nature of the show though really makes you think about the idea of love and how to define it in different contexts. Is it really love? Probably not since theres only one woman in the end but like 20 different women he's feeling up on. I think you encompassed the idea of using video as a tool to investigate really well. You did a wonderful job.

  2. I laughed so hard at this and also showed it to friends, this is amazing. I feel like this is actually something that would go viral. It is so creepy and weird and totally hilarious, I love it. I feel like high school kids, or even middle-schoolers, would get such a kick out of doing a project like this, like "satirize something that's over-done" or something like that. I think it would be really interesting in a classroom to ask students to do something like this where they are taking established popular culture and totally twisting it in a new way, kind of breaking it down, questioning it, and maybe laughing a little bit at it too. You also really seem to have mastered the Ken Burns effect- well done!!

  3. This is just so great. You have a really wide audience since so many people, including me, watch the show, so I love how you made a video montage to make fun of all the little things people probably view as romantic. I also agree with everyone's comments on the Ken Burns effect. I've seen a lot of people use the effect incorrectly where it just doesn't make sense in the videos, but you've really used it perfectly here and gave us a good mix of shots with panning and zooming in. I also love your music choice - it really compliments the piece and the satirical quality. I also connected it to Christian Marclay's piece "The Clock" that I showed an excerpt of during my presentation. You could definitely show Marclay's piece alongside this one for a class as inspiration for a prompt of collaging many different moments from movies or TV shows.

  4. I love your approach to video! It is so different and so creative. What a clever idea. I have also always noticed the awkward body language moments when watching The Bachelor...particularly this season. Arie is creepy and this video acts as evidence proving why. I love that you looked to popular culture to create this uncomfortable montage. I think you were really successful in making the viewer feel kind of weird while watching it -- that voyeuristic quality that you had described. The cheesy music added another layer. I couldn't look away despite the strange mood that you created. Instead of simply recreating a video, you took it to another level... Bravo!
